Had a weekend of painting oils with Kay Franklin at the Fredericksburg Art School October 8-10, 2010.

It was interesting to observe her techniques for still-life and plein-air.

We painted our choice of two still-life sets and had an outdoor adventure to Enchanted Rock.

Installed “A Burst of Orange” at Trudy’s North Star Restaurant & Bar this week. It is a repeated theme using a 6’ UT Tower I made out of foam core and assemblage. With the cooler mornings it really is a breath of fall.

This summer I’ve had an opportunity to show some of my figurative sculpture. I already posted that “Making the ‘A’ List” was juried into the “Fictional” show at the Bath House Art Center in Dallas. In August I’ll have two representations of a model name Dave at the Dougherty Arts Center in Austin August 5-28. Dave is probably the most painted and sculpted model in Central Texas.  As part of Austin Visual Arts Association’s “COLLABORATION” Exhibit we’ll be building a mural wall of artworks with Dave as the subject.

My entries are:

Dave was a portrait study that began professional life as “Saint Jerome” complete with tonsure hairdo. But after I parked a leather hat on him, he began a new life as “Dave Larson Down Under” (18”h x 13”w x16’d)

Dave became the “Colorado River God” (16”h x 23”w x 3”d) after I’d visited Italy and seen the classic river god sculptures in Rome.

By the way, “Making the ‘A’ List” was also Dave Larson!

The Multi-cultural Artists Partnership (MAP) is having an art show celebrating Texas Sunrise/Sunsets at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport from May 15 through August 14, 2010. My 3-Dimensional sculpture of CD’s and jeweltone CD cases entitled “Memories of Texas Sunsets”  is included in the West Gallery of the airport. Unfortunately, only ticketed passengers will be allowed through security to see the show, but that could be over 20,000 persons a day!

My bas-relief “Making the “A” List” was accepted into the Bath House Cultural Center exhibit in collaboration with the 12th Annual Festival of Independent Theatres. The artwork was chosen to represent basic aspects of 8 one-act plays. Although I haven’t been told, I suspect my artwork was picked for the play “A Day Spent in Purgatory”. The art show runs July 10 through August 7, 2010 at the Bath House Cultural Center, 521 E. Lawther Dr., Dallas, TX 75218 214.670.8749 Tues-Sat 12 noon to 6 pm.

I was challenged to create a 3-dimensional sculpture of a sunset. Here is what I came up with using CD discs and jewel-tone CD storage cases. Titled “Memories of Texas Sunsets” it’s 17” high by 14” circumference.

The inspiration came from photographing our gorgeous evening sunsets and storing them on CD discs labeled Jan-Mar 2007, etc. With every intention of painting sunsets until the cows came home.

My Monarch sculpture made the Austin American-Statesman Sunday Metro & State Section as the backdrop for a photo of Mike Quinn and a brief blurb about the Monarch migration!   http://www.statesman.com/news/local/austin-biologist-wants-texas-to-do-more-for-549250.html?cxtype=ynews_rss
